When you go in market to purchase a PC(Desktop/Notebook) you
should be very careful on what board, chipset and processor you are purchasing.
Normally detail information no dealer will give you or perhaps they themself are
not aware. What will happen is, in the end you land up purchasing a PC with low
cost but difficult to upgrade later. You will need a purchase completely
new one, For example I would be happy to spend 5k to 6k if I want to
switch from Dual Core to Core2Duo processor, but my board would not support as a
result I need to replace major components of my PC. Generally Indian customers
would not prefer.
With my few findings from Intel and other sources if you want
to purchase Intel based PC my recommendation would be as below.
Desktop:
- Motherboard: Select 965 Chipset based boards like DG965RY
supporting Dual Channel Memory
- Processor: Pentium D 930,940,950 or 960. depending on
speed you want to select. OR
- Core2DUO E6300 or E6400
are good for home/developer segment.
- L2 Cache is very important as its responsible for speed.
Go for 2 or 4 MB L2 cache
- Ask for 7200 RPM Hard Disk
- DDR2 1GB is Good for Home users and (n)GB for developers
(a developer understands why I say (n)GB.... LOL. ..... by the way 965
chipsets are capable to support up to 8 GB. )
- Select LCD monitors 15" or 17" are good and should be
wide screen ones. Good if you want to watch TV/Movie on it or work for long
hours
Cost for above as on date May 25, 2007 should be between 23 to
31 thousand.
Notebooks:
- For home segment users, I would say any notebook with
Core2Duo would be fine, but if you are a developer and want to do serious
development work with power of your desktop then select higher model and of
course it will cost you quite a bit. 90K to 1L INR.
- I hate 1.6, 1.7 or 1.8 Ghz models with 945 or older
chipsets.
- Its 2007 so select Intel's newer Core2Duo family of
processor and chipsets called (Santa Rosa
platform). Santa Rosa refers to the fourth-generation Centrino platform
- Motherboard: Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset with
Intel's GMA X3100 graphics (Vista Aero Effects support), 800 front side bus
-
 Processor:
Lookout for Logo "Centrino Pro" The refreshed lineup of Core 2 Duo laptop
processors now include T7100, T7300, T7500 and T7700 models, designed for
965 Mobile chipsets, 800MHz front side bus, compared to the first
generation of Core 2 Duos for notebooks with 667MHz FSB.
- Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (Wireless-N technology boasts
a 5X speed increase, along with a 2X greater coverage area, and supports 2.4
GHz and 5 GHz bandwidths, enough for high definition audio and video
streams)
- Chipsets supports up to 4GB of RAM DDR2 533 and 667Mhz.
